Eric J. Miller received a bachelor's degree in engineering science from the University of Toronto in 1973, a master's degree in aerospace studies from the same university in 1975, and a Ph.D. in civil engineering (Transportation Systems) in 1978 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.〔 After a brief position at McMaster University he joined the Toronto faculty in 1979 where he became Bahen–Tanenbaum Professor in 2000.〔 He is the author of the textbook ''Urban Transportation Planning: A Decision-oriented Approach'' (2nd ed., McGraw-Hill, 2001) and was editor-in-chief of the journal ''Transportation'' from 2002 to 2004.〔
